Well, it went….

Kyra and I had our reading of the musical at the Russ Tutterrow Theatre end of May. It was a scary sort of thing to go through even though the audience consisted of friends. First to actually hear something and is it what you wanted? Second, what about the audience? Was it funny where it was supposed to be funny? Poignant where it was supposed to be poignant? Did the audience respond? In the feedback were you graciously told to start again? All kinds of questions.

My husband said it went very well. The friends and theater folk invited seemed to like it. They particularly liked the way the lyrics fit to Kyra’s music. I, on the other hand, felt it was not the total success I wanted: which was to be done and ready to move on. Nick Patricca, former Loyola University Chicago professor of play writing, my first mentor, gave a very good review of it which I have shared with Kyra, Annie and moderator, and Jenny Magnus. I will need a lot of work in redoing it. This is a very depressing thought as is all work.

Along those lines: more rejections! I think out of 40 submitted I am up to 30. The grant proposal put together by Tyler for self producing House of Butterflies was rejected. That one hurt.

Outside of those lines: I took a new class to push myself to write more “spontaneously”, new works for my age by Jenni Lamb: Live on Location. A ten minute play to take place in a furniture store to be read after 5 weeks. Audience was the writers, actors, and family. I think it (The Gates to Hell) went ok.
